In this painting, Albert Bierstadt shows us an ancient market scene. The market shown in this painting is a fish market under the Arch of Octavius in ancient Rome. Your point of view in this painting is as if you are standing at the edge of the market watching the busy merchants doing their job.

It’s morning and all merchants have fresh catch. They’ve already arranged their goods in front of them to make it easy for the buyers to purchase. As you can see in the art piece, the market is busy with buyers. Some of them are enquiring and some of them are bargaining with merchants.

The arch leads to a street and you can see there are several merchants selling under the arch and towards the sides of the street. Many of them are under the shade and we cannot clearly see their goods. But, it’s clear from the painting that things are very busy across the street.

Towards the left foreground of this art piece, you’ll see a cat and several ducks. The cat is trying to steal a fish from a merchant, while ducks are wandering through the market floor for their morning meal. On right foreground, you’ll see a merchant sleeping on the floor. There’s also a dog close to him.

This lovely art piece can be a great addition for your living room. The scene of this artwork makes it an interesting artwork for your living room. It would also make a great art piece for your family or dining rooms. It could also be kept in your kitchen for inspiration. That said, we do not recommend keeping this art piece in your bedroom, office or library.
